Explaining car insurance levels of cover

Getting car insurance is a legal must-do

Getting car insurance often seems like an unnecessary hassle, but unfortunately it is a legal obligation to have the minimum motor cover if a driver wishes to take to the roads in a car.

All insurethebox car insurance policies are offered on a comprehensive cover basis and this means maximum protection for other road users, yourself and your vehicle.

What does car insurance cover?

The most basic car insurance cover available as a legal requirement is Third Party Only cover (TPO). This level of cover means that if a driver is at fault in an accident their insurer will pay the financial losses of the other party. The insurer will also be responsible for the settlement of any compensation claim in respect of personal injury.

The next level in car insurance is Third Party Fire and Theft (TPFT). Buying this type of cover means that, as well as cover for third party damages, should the car be stolen or set on fire, the insurer will make a payment to the car owner in respect of the value of the lost vehicle (subject to full investigation of course).

However, neither TPO or TPFT cover options provide any recompense should the vehicle be damaged. So, if a driver writes off their vehicle (that is it is damaged beyond repair) then the policyholder will not receive any financial remuneration. Likewise, if the car sustains repairable damage, the policyholder will have to finance the repairs in full out of his own pocket.

Comprehensive cover is, as the name suggests, the most comprehensive cover to ensure that the policyholder gains maximum financial recompense in the event of an accident. Sometimes known as fully comp insurance, this level of cover also means that the policyholder has all the cover benefits of TPFT plus the insurer will pay for damage to the vehicle (subject to certain policy excesses).
