Tidying the car for road safety and low mileage insurance no-claims
Tidying up for low mileage insurance deals
All drivers, whether they have low mileage insurance or are on the road often and travel long distances, should be aware of the dangers of loose items in their vehicle.
If a motorist is involved in an accident, the force of the collision may cause personal injuries such as whiplash but it could also throw any objects, which are not fastened down, towards the occupants of the car.
Although it is unlikely that a small tissue box will cause much harm, other items which might seem equally harmless, such as a torch, a mobile phone, or a bottle of water, could result in serious injury during an accident.
Just as an individual without their seatbelt on would probably be thrown from a vehicle if it crashes at high speed, any objects in a car which are not fixed in place will be displaced in a collision and this could mean that something heavy, hard, or sharp, could strike the driver or passengers.
If a vehicle is involved in a crash, travelling at just 30mph, a one-litre bottle of water could hit someone with the equivalent force of a weight of 20 kilograms. In fact, due to the change in gravity when a car is stopped violently, any loose object in a car can have its force of impact increased 20 times.
With that in mind it may be wise to secure all items possible, and put all others in the car boot or glove compartment. This could not only reduce the risk of further injury being sustained in a road traffic accident, but also reduce the likelihood of having one in the first place.
If there are any items on the floor of the vehicle, or objects in the car which could fall from their place and land beneath seats or in foot-wells, the movement of the car on the road may unintentionally manoeuvre them under the vehicle's pedals. This is very dangerous as, depending on the item, it could stop a driver from being able to push the brake pedal down, with possible disastrous consequences.
The simple act of cleaning the interior of a car, so that it is uncluttered, and making sure that any objects which still remain inside are secure could mean the difference between life and death. In less severe cases, it could save a motorist a trip to the hospital for stitches to the back of their head, or maybe stop the driver being injured or losing their no-claims bonus.
Both high and low mileage drivers may let their cars get messy, and it would be a shame to survive a serious car accident only to be struck down by the bottle of water on the back seat, so to avoid such an event occurring motorists are advised to tidy their vehicle's interior.
