If you don’t drive too often, then low mileage car insurance could be ideal
Low mileage car insurance and being prepared for breakdown
Even if you are a low mileage car insurance holder and don't drive very often, this doesn't necessarily mean that you will not break down somewhere far away from home or in a place which is unfamiliar to you.
Wherever you're planning on driving to, you should always be prepared for a minor accident or breakdown, so that you can keep yourself safe, and prevent other road users from danger which may be posed by your stationary vehicle.
At the beginning of any journey you should check your car for anything which could result in a crash or breakdown on the road. Lights, tyre pressure, petrol, brake fluid, and coolant are always good things to keep an eye on, and are quite simple to monitor.
Some weather conditions require different precautions to be taken before getting behind the wheel. For example, a driver setting off in cold weather or snow should have a blanket, food, a flask of hot drink and a torch in their car, so that in the event of being stranded as a result of the poor weather, a road traffic accident or breakdown, they can keep themselves warm until rescue.
In hot weather – however rare it is in the UK – a driver should have food and water with them, to maintain hydration, in case they need to stay in their vehicle for any extended amount of time. Keeping the air conditioning on will run down useful battery power, and is not always possible should the car stop working altogether.
The Highway Code
It is important when a driver experiences a car breakdown that they try to make the road safe for other motorists if the vehicle is in the way of traffic. If possible, the driver should move the car off the road, but if it is not possible, hazard warning lights should be used to signal to other road users that there is an obstruction.
In some situations it may be safe to get out of the car and place a warning triangle on the road 45 metres behind the stationary vehicle. Ideally, the individual doing this will be wearing bright or light-coloured clothing, and high-visibility reflective clothing if undertaking the task at night. Even on seemingly quiet roads great care must be taken when putting a triangle down, or retrieving one – and a driver should never attempt to use one on the motorway.
