Young driver news - First time car insurance holders might use toll lanes
Driver news - First time car insurance holders may struggle to pay fast-lane fees
Holders of first time car insurance policies may be among the motorists who could find a new traffic proposal being reviewed by Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne frustrating.
The scheme, which was put on hold after the Government's Spending Review in 2010, would see an extra lane added to notoriously busy roads such as the A14, in Cambridgeshire, in a bid to improve traffic flow and, consequently, Britain's economy.
Drivers who wish to use the new lane to avoid congestion would pay a toll for the privilege. This would improve the flow of traffic and mean that funds collected from toll lane users could be used to maintain the new road and potentially other areas of the UK road network if necessary.
However, this might also mean that more affluent road users will be able to use the toll lane while other motorists, such as young driver car insurance holders, might be unable to afford the extra fee forcing them to continue sitting in traffic jams.
As a result, first time car insurance holders who have managed to find the cheapest car insurance may have to use some of the saved funds to pay for motoring costs such as road tolls, road tax and fuel.
