Black box car insurance news - Many drivers unaware of road sign meanings
Car insurance news - Drivers need road sign knowledge to benefit from black box
Many drivers in the UK have reduced their annual premiums by opting for black box car insurance which offers cover based on how safe the policy holder is on the road. However, according to a report, many motorists may be driving dangerously every day due to their limited knowledge of the Highway Code.
A survey conducted by motor oil company Castrol has revealed that two thirds of drivers questioned admitted that they were confused by road signs on a daily basis. One in three motorists stated that they simply follow the car in front if they are unsure of what to do.
Additionally, one in twenty drivers claimed they ‘never' took any notice of road signs, potentially endangering lives.
These figures are perhaps not that surprising amid findings that just over half of motorists have not looked at the Highway Code since passing their practical driving test.
Quentin Willson, motoring expert and journalist, said, "It's worrying to think the vast majority of British motorists have not got a clue about the road signs they see every day.
"Signs are in place not only to help motorists navigate the road, but also for safety, and not taking the time to learn the most basic of instructions is lazy and irresponsible.
"There's only a few pages of road signs in the Highway Code. It's not War and Peace and reading five pages could one day save your life."
Drivers can improve their chances of finding a cheap car insurance quote, and be rewarded for obeying the laws set out in the Highway Code, by taking out black box car insurance which monitors how the insured car is being driven and may result in a cheaper premium at renewal.
