Pay how you drive insurance news - Black box car insurance and street lights
Car insurance news - Residential and rural streets have lights turned off
According to the Daily Mail, many rural and residential roads are having their street lights turned off by councils trying to save money.
Apparently, between midnight and around 5am, some road users will only have their car headlights to rely on, despite concerned residents of the affected areas stating that there could be an increase in crime and car accidents.
Motorists with black box car insurance in areas such as Derbyshire and Sudbury, for example, may want to take extra care when out on the roads at these times, since they could be at an increased risk of being involved in a crash and this could have a negative impact on the low annual premium rate of their pay-how-you-drive car insurance policy.
One Sudbury resident stated, "Vulnerable people will be put at risk, plus there is more chance of burglaries. I am paying my council tax for something I am not getting and I am concerned for people's safety."
However, a cabinet member for highways and transport explained, "We're committed to cutting our carbon emissions by 25% by 2014/15 and street lighting is one of the main offenders."
Whether or not drivers live in an area in which the streetlights have been switched off, care should be taken at any time of the day or night where visibility of the road is reduced.
Although black box car insurance policy holders receive low cost insurance, they should remember that it is not immune from price increases if they are found to be driving in a dangerous manner.
