Low mileage driver news - Car insurance for low mileage holders and mph change
Road user news - Car insurance for low mileage motorists on motorway
Reported Department for Transport (DfT) plans to increase the speed limit on motorways expeditiously have been denied by the DfT as speculation. However, a road safety expert interviewed by the Daily Mail stated, "We have heard whispers from civil servants that they have been looking [into having the speed limit changed] and have been advised from Whitehall insiders that they are minded to raise it soon."
Although the speed limit increase to 80mph would shorten journey times significantly, there is a risk that people would be involved in a greater number of accidents and therefore the UK could suffer an increase in the cost of car insurance.
For low mileage drivers this would mean that the best quotes for them will come from insurers which use telematics technology to offer a fair policy price to their customers by taking into account how often they use their car and how safe a motorist they are.
At present the limit is set at 70mph, but, according to the president of the AA, many motorists, including low mileage drivers, already drive at 80mph and are not stopped by police or prosecuted. However, the DfT propose to maintain stricter enforcement of the new speed limit.
Road safety campaign director for Brake has said, "It would be highly immoral to raise motorway speed limits when research indicates it would lead to more deaths and injuries."
A DfT spokesperson said, "We need to make sure that we are looking at the right criteria when considering what level speed limits should be set at.
"This means looking at the economic benefits of shorter journey times as well as considering other implications such as road safety and carbon emissions."
Although there is concern that people would take advantage of the increased speed limit and put lives at risk, if the change results in the UK benefiting economically, everyone in the country, including road users with car insurance for low mileage drivers, could be positively affected.
