Car insurance for new driver news - Council face bill for issued fines
New driver car insurance news - Good news for unfairly fined motorists
Motorists struggling to find a cheap car insurance quote, including those requiring car insurance for new drivers, are not likely to be very happy if they have been unfairly issued a fine for driving on the wrong part of the road.
However, 53 drivers have won an appeal to have their fines lifted after they were caught on a traffic camera in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire supposedly driving in a bus lane.
At a hearing in the Traffic Penalty Tribunal the motorists argued that road markings surrounding the camera, used by Hertfordshire County Council, had been unclear. The device has apparently caught 25,000 drivers since August 2011, reportedly raising more than £500,000.
Hertfordshire County Council did not present any evidence at the hearing and a spokeswoman for the council announced that it had no plans to reimburse other drivers who had already paid the fine.
The council could now potentially be billed for thousands of pounds if all the motorists who have already been caught by the camera were to demand reimbursement of the incorrectly issued fines.
