Car insurance news - Rural roads should be part of the driving test

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has claimed that driving on rural roads should be made a compulsory part of the practical driving test.

Young drivers are considered to be a high risk group by most insurance providers due to the numbers of accidents they are involved in. However, the IAM believes that many road accidents could be avoided if motorists have already gained experience of driving on A-roads.

According to reports, research from IAM has revealed that of fatal and serious casualties occurring in rural areas 82% happen on single-carriage roads, while just 18% occur on motorways and dual-carriageways.

The road safety charity has claimed that their recent report, titled "The Fast and the Curious" has shown that new drivers feel unprepared after they pass their driving test and would appreciate extra help when it comes to driving in real life scenarios.

Although many driving instructors already ensure that pupils experience driving on single-carriage rural roads, the charity has stated that as it is not a mandatory part of the driving test, other instructors don't always include these roads.

Simon Best, IAM chief executive said, "More than half the cars on our roads are rated as four or the maximum five star in European safety tests, and the figure is even higher for new cars. Our roads are also getting safer in their design.

"But the roads where drivers, especially young drivers, are most frequently killed and injured are still not consistently part of the driving test. The minister recently announced young drivers would be allowed to use motorways when accompanied by an instructor, but it is single carriageway A-roads where the real problem lies."

The charity hopes that this move would reduce the numbers of car accidents in the UK, consequently making the roads safer – if successful the change may make car insurance for women and men more affordable for those searching for a car insurance quote.
