Women's car insurance news - Disabled parking and car insurance for women
Highway news - Blue badge holders and car insurance for women
Law abiding citizens, such as those who have car insurance for women, may want to think twice before sneakily parking in disabled bays outside some of the UK's major retail chains as there could be serious consequences.
Disabled bays should only be used by blue badge holders, of which there are 2.5 million in the UK.
Local authorities around Britain have the power to issue fines to those who use disabled parking areas illegally on public highways, but cannot issue fines to those who park illegally on private land.
Amongst the areas counted as private land are the car parks of many large supermarket chains and Norman Baker, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, has appealed to firms to take tougher actions against road users who use the designated bays dishonestly.
Mr Baker stated, "Many disabled people and disability groups have told me about the problems they have in finding a disabled bay at supermarkets because of their abuse by people who have no justification for parking in reserved spaces."
Supermarket chains have been asked to issue illegally parked motorists with a parking charge notice, and may also start announcing the model and car registration of vehicles parked without blue badges over the shop's tannoy system in order to shame the car owners.
The AA has backed the move towards tougher penalties for able-bodied motorists who choose to park in disabled spaces.
Drivers who have gone to the trouble of finding cheap car insurance would be well advised to always park legally as a fine could negate any savings they have made on their car insurance for women.
