Motor news - ABI scheme to help young drivers find a cheap car insurance quote
Car insurance news - New ABI scheme could reduce quotes for young drivers
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has suggested a new scheme for first-time motorists which may help young drivers to secure a lower car insurance quote.
According to a report, the ABI has proposed stricter rules for new drivers which include restrictions on night-time driving and limits to the amount of passengers a driver is allowed to carry.
Under the ABI's new rules, all learner-drivers would be required to partake in a one-year learning period before becoming eligible to take a practical driving test while intensive driving courses taken over a short period of time would be banned.
The organisation has also suggested that new drivers should take a second driving test two years after gaining their full licence.
ABI spokesperson Malcolm Tarling stated that one in four UK car accidents resulting in death or serious injuries involve holders of young driver's car insurance. The new scheme would help to improve the safety of newly-qualified drivers on the roads.
Mr Tarling said, "We really need to take some action to make our young drivers safer for tomorrow.
"If we can bring the risk down, by encouraging safer, better driving, that will bring the cost of insurance down."
The ABI believes that if the proposed restrictions are put into effect, young drivers will be more likely to find a cheap car insurance quote in the future.
