Car insurance news - Workshops may help elderly drivers find a cheaper quote
It is widely known that young drivers often struggle to find a cheap car insurance quote as they are considered to be a group of high risk drivers, however, a road safety group in Lincolnshire has decided to act on a rise in road accident numbers involving elderly drivers.
The Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership will be offering older drivers the opportunity to attend workshops which will help them to learn about modern car technology, as well as allowing them to experience a simulator and skid car.
The safety group has launched the campaign amid findings that the number of over 65s killed or seriously injured in car accidents has risen from 39 in 2005 to 79 in 2010 in Lincolnshire.
Greville Burgess, principal road safety co-ordinator for the organisation, said, "Mature drivers often lack confidence, usually because they are unfamiliar with new technology such as ABS, traction control or even having so many gears.
"One man recently informed me that he had purchased a car with six forward gears but rarely gets out of 4th because he thought that 5th or 6th would make him travel too fast."
Although crashes involving older drivers are increasing, if these workshops are successful in helping elderly motorists to become safer drivers, over 65s may well be able to secure themselves better value car insurance quotes in the future – especially if they choose a telematics car insurance policy which offers a quote based upon the insured's safety on the road.
