Telematics insurance news - Curfew car insurance and snowy roads
Black box news - Holders of curfew car insurance might see snow on the roads
The Met Office has predicted over-night frosts in October, and Exacta Weather and Netweather have both warned that there may even be some early snowfall in the same month this year.
Young motorists with curfew car insurance may not need to worry about being stuck on a snowy road at night, but all motorists, whether they have curfew cover, telematics car insurance, or are covered by an insurer which does not use black box technology, will be pleased to know that the Met Office's route-based forecasts might help authorities grit the roads in time to stop traffic problems this year.
At Cold Comfort 2011, an annual Winter Maintenance conference for the industries which try to keep Britain moving though the winter, the Met Office will demonstrate how its accurate forecasts will help transport authorities plan ahead, grit the roads which need it most, and manage the amount of salt they have stored more efficiently than in winter 2010.
The road and rail business manager for the Met Office stated, "In any winter, we can expect hazards such as snow and ice to occur. It is vital that service providers have plans in place to react to our 1-5 day forecasts and warnings of such hazards and apply precautionary treatment to limit the impact on the travelling public.
"The Met Office delivers a range of weather services for the road industry. These provide good advice, and are a vital component of winter maintenance planning and operations."
Effective gritting of the highways should reduce the amount of accidents which occur over the season and it is hoped that when the UK is faced with snow and ice this winter, drivers will not find themselves stuck in weather-related traffic jams at any time – whether they are curfew car insurance holders who must not drive at night, or motorists with different types of cover which allow the road user to travel at any time they want.
