First time car insurance news - Thieves have been targeting roads for metals
Car insurance news - First time drivers amongst those affected by copper thefts
Road users, including first time car insurance holders and holders of low-mileage car insurance, are risking their safety by driving on insufficiently lit roads due to thieves targeting the road networks, a new report has revealed.
Stolen street light cables have caused sudden blackouts on some major roads, and West Yorkshire police have stated that £200,000 worth of cable containing copper and other metals has been stolen.
Andrew Howard, the AA's head of road safety has voiced concerns about the dangers that the thefts pose to motorists.
He said, "When you are talking about metal theft you also have to take into account warning signs being stolen.
"If this happens on a bend, it can be really dangerous. On a remote road in North Yorkshire, for example, you would expect chevron signs and if that is not there it is much more worrying."
Chancellor George Osborne has announced plans to launch a task force, costing £5 million, which will aim to put a stop to criminal gangs and scrap metal dealers who make money from stolen road furniture materials.
