Police had been warning party-goers over the festive period about the risks of getting behind the wheel the morning after a night spent drinking. The message was aimed primarily at drivers aged below 25, although police carried out breathalyser tests on 4,441 motorists of different ages and abilities.
The results have shown that five percent of motorists stopped who were under the age of 25 failed or refused a test. The result over all age groups of those who refused or failed a test was 5.4 percent.
These figures were at their worst in summer 2011 when 10.8 percent of drivers under 25 failed or refused to take a breathalyser test.
Superintendent Darren Downs, head of the Roads Policing Unit said, "The vast majority of motorists travelling on the roads throughout the Humberside Police area are to be congratulated for their considerate and responsible driving attitude and behaviour during the campaign period.
"However, for those few irresponsible and selfish individuals who decide not to heed all the warnings and continue to drink and drive, be warned that Humberside Police is looking out for you and there is a very high probability that you will be caught and dealt with by the criminal justice process."
Young drivers are considered to be a high risk group of drivers and often struggle to find a cheap car insurance quote, however, many inexperienced motorists are making savings with first time car insurance from telematics insurers which offer rewards to those who drive safely.
