Tracker car insurance news - EU proposal good for GPS car insurance

Low mileage news - GPS car insurance popularity could increase due to EU proposal

A recent proposal by the European Commission to slowly phase out all petrol and diesel vehicles from European city centres by 2050 is likely to positively affect the take-up of GPS car insurance if the plan is put into action.

If the scheme is introduced to Europe, there is a possibility that the number of GPS car insurance holders in the UK will increase as people begin to spend less time on the roads but still need their vehicles for occasional journeys.

However, the EC plan has not been greeted with enthusiasm by the UK Transport Minister, Norman Baker, who stated, "We will not be banning cars from city centres anymore than we will be having rectangular bananas."

The European Union wishes to cut reliance on oil-powered vehicles and reduce emissions from all road transport by 60% in the next 40 years and Siim Kallas, the EU Transport Commissioner, has reassured motorists that "the widely-held belief that you need to cut mobility to fight climate change is simply not true".

Nevertheless, a spokesperson for The Association of British Drivers has branded the idea as "crazy" and said, "If he wants to bring everywhere to a grinding halt and to plunge us into a new dark age, he is on the right track. We have to keep things moving. The man is off his rocker."

UK Transport Minister, Mr Baker, believes that is it "right that the EU sets high-level targets for carbon reduction" but "not right for them to get involved in how this is delivered in individual cities," stating that Britain is already trying to cut pollution by "investing more than £400m over the next four years to support electric vehicles and promoting alternatives to car travel like walking and cycling".

The EC plan targets city-to-city trips, those classed as "middle distance journeys", and proposes that significantly more freight and passenger travel should be made by rail rather than road. This could result in a greater number of motorists seeking low mileage vehicle insurance.

GPS car insurance, which is favoured by lower mileage drivers, is likely to increase in popularity. Any motorists already using tracker car insurance are well prepared for the possible adjustments to be made to UK transport usage.
