New drivers car insurance news - Car insurance for young drivers and breakdown
Road user news - Holders of car insurance for young drivers not as helpful
Motorists with car insurance for young drivers could be seen as more prone to suffering a breakdown than more experienced road users, since they may not be as familiar with the workings of their vehicle.
However, research by oil manufacturer Castrol has shown that people with new driver's car insurance are much less likely to help someone who has broken down than older motorists.
Reportedly, 49% of 45 to 54-year-olds would stop to help a fellow road user, 70% of 25 to 34-year-olds would offer to help, and only 37% of 18 to 24-year-olds would proffer their services.
Of the 2,000 British drivers surveyed by the firm, 64% admitted to never having stopped to help someone whose vehicle had broken down on the side of the road.
A Castrol spokesperson stated, "It's unfortunately not surprising that more British motorists are concerned about stopping to help others in need when broken down on the side of the road nowadays, as safety is always a primary concern amongst both the stranded motorist and the individual offering assistance.
"To help ensure safety when driving, motorists should take care to try and reduce the risk of breaking down through always making sure they keep on top of their car maintenance.
"In particular the simplest of maintenance tasks can ensure you avoid preventable breakdowns, such as topping up your water and oil and checking tyre pressures regularly."
Road users with car insurance for young drivers who want to show willing and help a stranded motorist, should make sure that they are not putting themselves in harm's way as a consequence of their benevolent actions.
