Low mileage car insurance news - More rigorous driving tests proposed by MPs
Car insurance news - Low mileage drivers and harder driving tests to improve roads
MPs have been considering new ways to help ease UK road congestion, adding to the improvements low-mileage drivers already make to the road, as holders of low mileage car insurance already keep congestion to a minimum by not often driving long journeys.
MPs in the Transport Select Committee have been examining ways of improving traffic without additional road building or introducing new road-use charges for drivers.
The committee has proposed that young drivers should face tougher driving tests. It has been reported that that road traffic problems will cost an extra £22 billion to the British economy by 2025 if they are not solved.
It is thought that stricter driving tests could improve safety on the roads and increase the flow of traffic.
A report from the committee said, "The overwhelming view from the evidence we received was that aspects of poor road user behaviour led to increased congestion."
The DVLA website may begin to display changes to the Highway Code more clearly for motorists due to renew their licence and also issue the information in leaflets with tax disc renewal reminders.
A free Highway Code app, designed for mobile phones, to improve standards of driving was also suggested by the committee.
Another proposal was that drivers should be encouraged to use the Traffic Programme button in their cars which can provide up-to-date information on potential areas of congestion.
Drivers who already try to reduce congestion by rarely driving long distances could make savings by taking out a low mileage car insurance policy.
