Road safety news - Low mileage car insurance holders and camera effectiveness

Many low mileage car insurance holders might be interested to learn that councils all over Britain now have until the 20th of July to provide the public with information regarding how much money speed cameras in their area are making from fines.

This information has never been available before but, Mike Penning, the UK Road Safety Minister for the Department for Transport, believes that motorists should know how effective UK speed cameras are.

Under the new scheme, which has been put into place so that ineffective cameras are dismantled, councils will provide information showing how much money each camera makes.

Police will release figures concerning the number of speeding prosecutions handed out as a result of each camera's activity, and The Highways Agency will produce data to show casualty and accident statistics for individual camera sites before and after its installation.

Once the information, as a whole, is available to the general public and can be scrutinised by individuals who wish to do so, Mr Penning has said it will "improve accountability and make sure that the public are able to make informed judgements about the decisions made on their behalf."

He adds that "if taxpayers' money is being spent on speed cameras then it is right that information about their effectiveness is available to the public."

The initiative is likely to mean that some cameras will be taken down by council authorities since taxpayers, including low mileage drivers, will be able to see "whether a camera is saving lives or just making money," adding to the pressure some councils have felt from the public to decommission certain Gatso cameras.

Not only should this save taxpayers' money, but it could also mean that low mileage car insurance holders, and motorists who spend more time on the roads, can be aware of which stretches of roads have most accidents occurring on them and may help drivers decide to take greater care in those areas.
