Telematics insurance news - Miles-based car insurance and 'run-around' vehicles
Low mileage insurance news - Family cars change with the times
Miles-based car insurance is becoming increasingly popular, but even as recently as ten years ago it was unheard of and the motoring world has seen many other changes since then.
Until relatively recently, in most households, the woman used the small ‘run-around' car, and the man used the large, uneconomical luxury vehicle.
However, research by a car insurance company has revealed that times have changed and now, more than ever it, is the female driver who is using the more powerful car.
Apparently, car ownership in Britain has seen great changes in the last 30 years.
Social and economic factors have led to fathers saving money by driving a more cost-effective vehicle on the longer distance commute, while mothers take children to and from school in the larger, family car.
The company's insurance director also stated that whereas years ago many families used to own a saloon car and a ‘run-around', "now you're more likely to see two Volkswagen Golfs or newer SUV/4x4 hybrids like the Nissan Qashqai and the Suzuki Grand Vitara sharing driveway space".
She continued, "As families' lives become more busy and complex, with two working parents and children to be dropped off at school, it appears multitasking mums need a vehicle fit for both work and family life while cost and fuel efficiency are increasingly important to dad."
Potentially, more drivers are also turning to miles-based car insurance to save more money. Whether or not a driver is using telematics car insurance, a spokesperson for another insurer advised, "The simple rule is do the longer journey in the car that drinks less fuel."
