Telematics car insurance news - Campaign launched to prevent drink driving
Telematics news - Car insurance holders encouraged to become designated driver
Over the festive period many groups of friends will arrange for a member of their party to be the designated driver for an evening out so that they can all return home safely. Telematics car insurance holders are likely to be aware that any untoward driving behaviour would be captured by their black box and so, will hopefully avoid any temptation to drive while under the influence of alcohol.
In a bid to crack down on drink driving over Christmas and encourage more party-goers to designate a driver, the Government has unveiled a buy-one-get-one-get-free incentive for drivers who have agreed not to consume alcohol, according to reports.
The campaign, which is run by Think!, in partnership with Coca-Cola, is being aimed at men aged 17 to 29, a group which is highly over-represented in drink-drive accident figures, and will see many designated drivers being rewarded with free Coke or Diet Coke in 8,000 pubs and student union bars across the UK.
The scheme will reportedly cost £660,000 and will be advertised on radio stations, posters in pub toilets, Facebook and using online search activity.
Mike Penning, road safety minister, said, "The number of drink-drive deaths has fallen by more than 75% since 1979, but drink-driving is still devastating lives, with around 250 people killed in collisions where a driver was over the limit last year.
"Our Think! campaign makes it clear that drivers who get behind the wheel over the limit risk losing their licence as well as facing a fine and even a prison sentence."
Drivers should also remember that after a drink-driving conviction cheap car insurance will be extremely hard to find.
