Black box car insurance news - Tyneside police warn drivers about thieves
Car insurance news - Telematics technology can't prevent car thieves
Drivers who have a black box car insurance policy can usually take some comfort in the fact that, if their car is stolen, the presence of the telematics technology means that their vehicle might be able to be tracked and is more likely to be recovered.
However, unfortunately even this type of insurance can't prevent thieves from breaking into cars to steal valuable items, and South Tyneside police has warned drivers about the dangers of leaving valuable items on show in parked vehicles.
According to a report, the force has voiced concerns that motorists are attracting thieves by leaving goods on display – an hour-long investigation led by police found that 28 parked cars in the borough had items on show, including gadgets and Christmas presents.
Over the next few weeks, police officers will be sending letters containing advice about crime prevention to car owners whose vehicles have been found to be an easy target for thieves.
Peter Sutton, Neighbourhood Inspector, said, "Leaving goods on display increases the risk of your vehicle being broken into, and at this time of year the message ‘don't leave items on show' couldn't be more relevant.
"Don't give thieves the chance to ruin your Christmas, make sure goods are not left on display in vehicles."
The police have been using similar shock tactics over the last seven years in an attempt to warn drivers about the dangers of having their vehicles targeted by thieves – the warning is part of Northumbria Police's campaign ‘Don't let thieves steal your Christmas'.
