Car insurance news - Wasted Lives campaign aimed at new drivers
A hard-hitting road safety campaign has been launched in Lancashire aiming to deter holders of new driver car insurance from adopting dangerous driving habits,
Lancashire fire fighters have collaborated with the Lancashire Partnership to promote the award-winning road safety scheme in the Ribble Valley.
The "Wasted Lives" campaign is aimed at young drivers and was launched with a presentation which several young drivers and their parents attended.
Attendees learnt shocking statistics designed to make them think more carefully about the way they drive.
The presentation revealed that just 16% of the county's driving population is made up of young male drivers, yet they are responsible for 53% of deaths and serious injuries on Lancashire's roads.
Statistics show that one in three holders of young driver car insurance will be involved in a car accident within the first two years of passing their driving test, and young male drivers are twice as likely to die in a car crash when they carry passengers of their own age.
Drivers who are over the legal alcohol limit are responsible for nearly one in six road fatalities.
Station manager, Liam Wilson said, "The Wasted Lives Programme challenges the attitudes of young drivers', and those of their parents, concerning the risks associated with driving. We are proud to have been key partners in the campaign from the outset and will continue to give it our full support, recognising the major contribution it is making to changing young driver behaviour for the better."
The campaign will be presented to young people at high schools and colleges, including those who are likely to be considering taking out a new driver car insurance policy.
