Keeping a spare tyre for tricky situations

It is useful for drivers to become familiar with the technique involved in changing a tyre, which may have to be done in difficult conditions such as on a motorway or in pouring rain.

It is also a good idea for motorists to learn the locations of the car jack, the spare tyre and the locking wheel nut tool, which would all need to be used to change a tyre.

There are two different types of spare tyres found in vehicles – some vehicles may contain a full size tyre, whereas other vehicles may have a ‘mini spare' which is designed to save space.

‘Mini spares' are not suited to be driven on for long distances and are intended to get the car's occupants home – many of these tyres cannot be used above speeds of 50mph.
