The rules of road tax and finding car insurance for young drivers

Car insurance for young drivers and tax discs

Finding car insurance for young drivers, may seem the most important legal road regulation – but it is also illegal to drive without a tax disc.

All vehicles being used on public roads must have an up-to-date tax disc displayed on the passenger side of the windscreen.

Motorists can choose to pay for six or 12 months tax and can also choose whether or not to receive a reminder that their tax disc is about to expire.

This means that there is no excuse for driving without valid road tax.

However, even if a road user has received their new tax disc they must be careful not to display it before the current disc is out of date, while also remembering that old tax discs should not be displayed after the new one has come into effect.

A police officer pulling a driver over for not displaying the correct disc will not be able to take the motorist's word that the new one is laying on the kitchen table forgotten. The motorist might be reported to the DVLA as not having paid their road tax, and could be prosecuted for not displaying the disc even when it is discovered that it has indeed been renewed.

Even though all payments made are viewable on a database the system is not always 100% accurate, so as a precautionary measure police officers often follow procedures as if the road user had not paid.

If a car owner really hasn't paid their road tax, they could be given a fixed penalty notice and fined up to £1000. Failure to pay the fine could result in the driver being given a summons or having their vehicle clamped.

The cost of road tax varies depending on the size and type of the vehicle's engine, but even the most expensive road tax is still less than half the cost of the potential fine for driving without paying the duty.

To work out how much their road tax will cost, drivers can go to the Direct.gov website and check the price tables provided.
