Double and single yellow lines and young driver car insurance
Young driver car insurance and yellow line parking
Can't find a place to park? Feel like there's lots of space on that double yellow line? Don't do it young driver car insurance holders! It's really not worth it.
Double yellow lines mean that waiting or parking is prohibited 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 a year. Ignoring the lines and parking anyway could mean that you get handed a penalty charge notice or fixed penalty notice, depending on whether parking is regulated by the council or police in that area.
You can appeal against your penalty charge notice (issued by the council) if you believe that you have been given a ticket erroneously, but you have to do that within 14 days of receiving it.
Plus, the cost of your fine may increase substantially the longer you refuse to pay. If your appeal has been rejected but you still believe that you should not have been given the ticket, you can contact the Parking and Traffic Appeals Service (for offences in London) or the Traffic Penalty Tribunal (for offences outside London).
You can also appeal against a fixed penalty notice (issued by the police) if you believe it was unjustly given to you. This is done in court. You'll have to appeal within 28 days of the fixed penalty being issued. After 28 days, if you haven't appealed or paid, your fine will increase by 50% and you could be prosecuted.
Don't be caught out by single yellow lines either. There are restrictions on waiting and parking on a single yellow too. There should be a sign to show motorists when they should not use that particular piece of road for waiting or parking. If you can't see it because it's been broken off or obscured by a hedgerow, then it's probably better to play it safe and park elsewhere.
Unfortunately, staying away from double yellow lines and largely avoiding the single yellows may not stop you from parking in an unsuitable place. There are quite a few areas on UK roads which are deemed inappropriate places for drivers to park, since the vehicle could become an obstruction.
If you want to make sure that you don't park somewhere which could see you incurring a fine or an angry note under your windscreen wiper, take a look at Directgov's webpage on Waiting and Parking.
