Help Category: The Black Box

What does the black box look like?

It’s made of black plastic and is about the size of a large mobile phone – it is shaped like one and even has a SIM card. The black box is completely sealed and cannot be opened without triggering a tamper alert.

Will I have to pay for the box if I do not renew my policy at the end of the first year?

No – you will not have to pay any extra towards the cost of the black box if you do not renew your policy at the end of your first year of cover.

However, if your policy is cancelled and a black box has already been fitted to your car, or had been fitted to a car you previously insured with us, the cancellation fee will be £80. Fees will be subject to Insurance Premium Tax where applicable.

Who will contact me regarding the black box fitting?

When you take out your policy with us or change your car, we will contact you within five working days to arrange a convenient appointment for a black box to be fitted. This will occur within 14 days of the start of your cover. We will usually arrange for the fitting to take place at either your home or place of work, between Monday and Friday.

Where in my car is the box fitted?

This depends on the make and model of your car. In all cases the black box will be out of sight, will not affect the electrics in your car, and will take under an hour to install.

Will I be covered before the black box is fitted?

Yes – you will be insured to drive your car from the date your policy starts. Once the black box is fitted we will begin collecting driving data. However, we have a right to cancel the policy if we have been unable to fit the black box within 14 days from the date that you took out your insurance. Please see your policy documents for more details.

What should I do about the box if I change car?

If you insure your new car with insurethebox, we will simply fit a new black box to your new car. The box in the previous car will be switched off so no data is transmitted. It will only be removed if either you or the new owner specifically requests it.

Please note: there is a £90 fee if you change your car. Fees will be subject to Insurance Premium Tax where applicable.

Are there any other benefits to having a black box, except monitoring my driving?

The black box has a built-in theft tracking device that allows us to try to locate your car quickly in the event of it being stolen. It can also alert us if data indicates a possible accident – if we think it is appropriate we can then try to contact the emergency services.

If I cancel my policy what happens to the box?

In the event of cancellation the black box will remain in your car but it is permanently disabled by us remotely. If you wish you may request for it to be removed.

Please note: if your policy is cancelled a black box has already been fitted to your car, or had been fitted to a car you previously insured with us, the cancellation fee will be £80. Fees will be subject to Insurance Premium Tax where applicable.

Will I be able to tell if the black box has stopped working?

No, but we will be alerted and will contact you directly. Most problems can be solved remotely but on the rare occasion that the box needs replacing, insurethebox will organise to replace the box at no extra charge.

What happens if a tracking device is already fitted?

That’s fine -it can remain in place. If necessary we can fit the black box somewhere else within your car.
