Other people have access to my car. Can the box tell who is using the vehicle?

The box doesn’t determine who is driving the car and therefore all drivers’ driving behaviours can affect your driving score, Bonus Miles, renewal discounts and potentially lead to policy cancellation. Therefore it is important to advise anyone who is driving the car of the importance of driving safely.

Why haven’t I earned any Bonus Miles when I have got a red for speed but everything else is green?

Speed is an important factor when determining how safe a driver is. Drivers who speed are proven to be at a higher risk of an accident than those who don’t. Speeding is one of the factors that impacts the number of Bonus Miles you receive.

I use cruise control or my own GPS tracker or speedometer how is the box any different from this?

The black box monitors a number of driving related factors, such as mileage, speed, the time of day and types of road you are travelling on. It records any sudden impacts on the vehicle, monitoring any heavy braking or harsh acceleration. We will post a summary of your driving data on Your Portal, where you will be able to see Bonus Miles awarded to you for positive driving behaviour.

Do you feedback any speeding instances to the police or other motoring authorities?

While we encourage safe driving and advise you to drive at a speed which is appropriate for the type of road and driving conditions, we will not tell the police if you go over the speed limit. We will not release your driving information to the police or to any civil authorities unless we have your permission or we are required to do so by law, or we suspect fraud or attempted fraud.

How does the box know the speed limit of certain roads?

Our black boxes have built in GPS so we have comprehensive mapping of the UK. This enables us to plot each journey against the road travelled and also the speed limit in force on the entire route.

How can I earn Bonus Miles?

You can earn up to 100 Bonus Miles each month by driving safely. We calculate your Bonus Miles using information from the black ox in your car. The safety factors we consider include speed, time of day, smooth driving, taking breaks on long journeys and the type of road you drive on. You can also earn more Bonus Miles by using the motorway more often. The motorway is statistically safer than other types of road, so we reward customers who drive more of their miles on the motorway.

Why have I not received any Bonus Miles this month?

We use a variety of factors to calculate how many Bonus Miles you earn each month. It has been proven that more accidents occur at night and during the rush hour, so driving at these times can affect your Bonus Miles. We also try to discourage speeding and rapid acceleration or harsh braking (except in emergencies), so you may not earn as many Bonus Miles if you do this.

Finally, we encourage you to take breaks on long journeys and drive on the motorway when possible, so this can increase the amount of Bonus Miles you earn. Please note this is a reward system and not a way of penalising our customers. We will not change the price of your premium within the first year, providing your circumstances stay the same.
