We assess driving behaviour by fitting a telematics black box - the in-tele-box - to your car. The in-tele-box is about the size of a mobile phone and is fitted out of sight in the car. It is safe and doesn’t interfere with the workings of your car.

Telematics (black box) technology allows us to gather accurate information about your driving, so we can calculate car insurance premiums and rewards based on individual driving behaviour. If you drive safely you can earn more Bonus Miles and may get a discount at renewal.

We believe this technology will encourage you to drive more safely, and may provide a less stressful experience in the event of an accident.

Fitting an in-tele-box

Our telematics box for car insurance

When you take out your insurethebox policy we will arrange for a black box - the in-tele-box - to be fitted to your car at no extra charge.

The fitting process takes about an hour and can be carried out at your home or workplace at a time agreed by you and our fitting team. Normal hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

The in-tele-box sends us the following information:

    • The time of day or night you drive
    • The speed you drive at on different sorts of road
    • If you brake or accelerate sharply
    • If you take breaks on long journeys
    • Your motorway miles
    • Your total mileage
    • The total number of journeys you make

Your Portal

When you insure with us we give you access to Your Portal, a personalised page on our website. This is where you can see a summary of the driving data collected by the in-tele-box, including your monthly Bonus Miles score.

You can earn up to 100 Bonus Miles each month to add to your Policy Miles. Plus there’s no need to worry if you have Bonus Miles left over at the end of the year – you can roll them over to your next year’s policy.

(Please note: it is not possible to roll over Policy Miles)

Accident Alert

If the in-tele-box fitted in your car senses a strong impact on the vehicle, it sets off an alarm in our Service Centre.

Our trained team will look at the data from the box to understand more about what has happened. We can then help you if necessary, which in some serious cases may involve contacting the emergency services.

The information from the box can also help in processing a claim. The data includes:

  • Time and place of the accident
  • Force of impact on the vehicle
  • Direction of travel at the time of impact
  • Speed of the vehicle prior to and after the time of impact

Theft recovery

The black box we fit to your car provides you with a theft tracking system at no extra cost.

This means that if your car is stolen, you can contact insurethebox and we can use the GPS information from the box to help find its exact location.

Safe driving rewards - not penalties

Unlike some other black box insurers, we will not increase your premium during the year if you drive badly. Providing your policy details stay the same throughout the year (such as your car and address) your premium will be fixed for the full policy year.

In fact we don’t have any fines or punishments at insurethebox, and we do not impose penalties for driving at night. We just reward safe driving.
