Safe steering by holders of car insurance for young drivers
Car insurance for young drivers who use correct steering technique
Holders of car insurance for young drivers may be fresh out of their driving lessons, but that doesn't mean that they can't become a little complacent on the roads when it comes to some of their safe motoring skills.
One of the skills which can all too easily slip away, and be replaced by a bad habit that's difficult to shift, is correct steering technique.
Common mistakes when behind the wheel are only using one hand to control the vehicle or crossing hands over each other to perform a turn, or even using only one hand to turn the steering wheel by applying pressure and not grip.
These techniques significantly lower the amount of control the driver has over their car, and may result in an accident.
The greatest amount of control over a vehicle is gained by keeping both hands on the wheel at distances far apart enough from each other that, at a moment's notice, any part of either side of the wheel can be reached.
This way, if the driver encounters something unexpected they should be able to avoid it more easily by using two hands to move the wheel in full rotation.
However, if a driver is steering with one hand or by crossing their hands over one other, they might find that they cannot turn the car away at the angle needed to avoid the obstacle quickly enough.
Using two hands while driving along a road, or undertaking manoeuvres, should also help keep the car straighter and movements more precise. This may further reduce the possibility of a collision on the highway, or the car sustaining a scratch or bump with a stationary vehicle or item of road furniture.
