insurethebox reveals 17-year-old men speed 130% more than women of the same age[i]
Telematics insurance pioneer, insurethebox has revealed new data aiming to answer the age old question – which sex drives better. According to the company’s 5 billion miles of driving data and related claims, it has revealed that women trump their male counterparts behind the wheel.
insurethebox’s data shows age plays a significant role in the likelihood of speeding. The younger the age group, the higher the difference in speeding occurrences. And staggeringly, 17-year-old men speed 130% more than women[ii] of the same age. It is not until motorists hit their thirties that men begin to take their foot off the accelerator, with the difference compared to women drivers dropping to 32%[iii].
On average in the UK, men speed 94% more than women[iv]. There’s also a regional trend at play. Men in Scotland speed 59% more than women and men in Wales speed 76% more than women.
Gary Stewart, Service Manager at insurethebox commented: “Speed is the single biggest contributor to driving risk – and the one thing that every driver has control over. Yet it seems to be the biggest differentiator between young women and men driving safely.”
Another measure of safe driving is the Bonus Miles given to insurethebox policyholders for good driving. The car insurance provider looks at acceleration, braking, total miles covered and stopping for rests on long journeys as measures for awarding Bonus Miles. Good driving behaviour can earn policyholders up to 100 Bonus Miles each month, which can be used supplementary to a driver’s policy.
Across the UK, women collect 14% more Bonus Miles on average than men[vii]. However, Scotland and Wales see the smallest difference, with women earning 6% and 9% more than men[viii] respectively.
The one road type where male drivers have the upper hand is motorways. According to the insurethebox data, men earn 8% more Bonus Miles than women for motorway driving[ix].
Please find the full speeding data sets below. Unless otherwise specified, reference to women and men indicates a driver below the age of 25.
