New initiative designed to help combat high car insurance costs for young and inexperienced drivers

Telematics insurance forerunner, insurethebox, now offers its customers the chance to protect their No Claim Discount (NCD) for no additional cost. This benefit has been made available to all new customers and existing customers at renewal, with at least one year of NCD.

Bucking the general industry trend of only giving Protected NCD after three or four years of no claims, insurethebox offers  this from one year, derived from a desire to help young and inexperienced drivers tackle high costs associated with driving. The majority of insurethebox customers being young drivers, the insurer also recognises the importance of encouraging safe driving behavior.

In 2020, new insurethebox customers received an average 32% for one year of No Claim Discount, increasing to 40% for the second year of no claims driving. This illustrates the benefit of being able to protect your NCD in the early years of driving.

However, it is important for to distinguish between protecting your NCD and your policy itself. Whilst your NCD years will be covered in the event of an accident (maximum two claims within five years)[1], your premium may still rise. Factors such as changing car or moving  to a more crime-ridden area may still affect the overall pricing of your policy.

Gary Stewart, Service Manager at insurethebox: “Offering protected NCD to drivers with lower levels of NCD was a conscious effort to support young drivers, and making this available at no extra cost is a further testament to that.

With us, the discounts available for driving with no claims are in addition to a potential renewal discount earned with safe driving behaviour, as we use telematics data to calculate personalised premiums. ”

insurethebox policies offer an initial 6,000, 8,000 or 10,000 miles of cover. Through a black box installed in the vehicle, the insurer uses individual driver data to determine the risk profile of each policyholder and calculate their premiums. insurethebox shares driving data with each customer through a personalised online portal empowering them to better manage their driving habits, in order to reduce their insurance risk profile – and possibly their renewal price. In this way, insurethebox helps young motorists make positive changes to their driving behavior, and the introduction of protected NCD at no extra cost is a further step in empowering young drivers.
