What are Policy Miles?

With insurethebox you can select how many miles you expect to drive in a year and this is used to help calculate your premium. These miles are called Policy Miles. When you take out your policy with us you pay for a set number of Policy Miles – 6,000, 8,000 or 10,000 – which are measured by the black box fitted to your car. Additional miles are available if you need more; see Top Up Miles and Bonus Miles.

For more information on Policy Miles please visit this page on our website.

What if I need to drive more than the total Policy Miles?

You can buy Top Up Miles online via the Top Up Miles page on Your Portal at any time. The cost of Top Up Miles depends on the price of your policy – this is called your cost per mile rate and it was set when you took out your policy, changed your details, or when you renewed.

You can see the price of your Top Up Miles bundles on the Top Up Miles page of Your Portal.

What if I don’t use up all my Policy Miles?

You select 6,000, 8,000 or 10,000 Policy Miles; there are no refunds for Policy Miles that are unused at the end of the period of policy cover and they do not ‘roll over’ to the next year’s policy when you renew. If, at the end of the year, you have any remaining Top Up Miles or Bonus Miles these will be rolled over to the following year and will be used first.

What are Bonus Miles?

Bonus Miles are additional miles you can earn as a reward for safe driving. If you drive responsibly you could earn up to 100 Bonus Miles each month – that’s up to 1,200 a year! Bonus Miles help us work out how much you pay when you renew. They let you prove you are a safe driver and allow us to treat you as an individual.

Bonus Miles are awarded on a monthly basis and will appear in Your Portal seven days after the policy month has ended.

How can I earn Bonus Miles?

You can earn up to 100 Bonus Miles each month by driving safely. We calculate your Bonus Miles using information from the black ox in your car. The safety factors we consider include speed, time of day, smooth driving, taking breaks on long journeys and the type of road you drive on. You can also earn more Bonus Miles by using the motorway more often. The motorway is statistically safer than other types of road, so we reward customers who drive more of their miles on the motorway.

In what order are miles used up?

There are three different types of miles, Policy Miles, Top Up Miles and Bonus Miles. In your first year with insurethebox you use your Policy Miles first, followed by Top Up Miles, and Bonus Miles. Policy Miles are the only ones that will not be rolled over to next year’s renewal. After renewal, any Top Up Miles and Bonus Miles from the previous year are used first, before your new Policy Miles.

Is there a limit to the amount of extra miles I can buy?

No – there is no limit to the amount of Top Up Miles you can buy.

How are miles measured and used?

The miles that you drive are recorded by the black box which links to a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) and feeds the information back to insurethebox. You use up your Policy Miles annual allowance first, and then Top Up Miles and Bonus Miles in that order.
